FINE NINTH PLATE AMBROTYPE OF AN ARMED SAILOR. Crisp image of a young man wearing his sailor's blouse with tie and his naval hat. On his left hip is a revolver and on the other his bowie knife. Gilt highlights on the butt strap of the pistol and on the stag handle of the knife. Red tinting on both his cheeks. Image sits within an embossed, gilt metal, frame that fits inside its patriotic thermoplastic storage case. 2 1/2" w. x 3" h. x 3/4" thick. Front and rear of case raise decorated with crossed American flags, shields and foliate borders. Behind the framed image is the maker's printed advertising information of Samuel Peck who worked in New Haven, CT 1844-1857. He was a daguerrotypist in 1844 and in 1850 patented the thermoplastic case. Condition of everything superb. Circa 1850-60.
