AMERICAN CLIPPER SHIP PORTRAIT ON THE LID OF A WHITE PORCELAIN BOX. Hand painted portrait showing a starboard view of the vessel "HIPPOGRIFFE" under full sail. Typically done on porcelain teacups by 19th century german artists for sea captains that sailed into the Port of Hamburg, Germany. This is the only one I ever came across done on a small, fancy shaped, container/box. 2 1/2" x 3 3/4" x 1 1/4" deep. Condition excellent. This clipper ship was built in 1852 on Cape Cod at the Shiverick Shipyard in East Dennis, MA. One of a small grouping of this unique form of ship portraiture that I assembled over several decades.
