ELEGANT SILVER DIRK AND SCABBARD. Dual tapered handle with three panels delicately engraved with foliate motifs. Round pommel decorated with two bands of saw teeth designs. The top band having added leaf engraving. Reverse guard terminated by round discs that are ornately decorated on both sides. Leaf design langets on both sides. 5 1/2" l. slightly curved, diamond shaped, gray metal blade. Scabbard with foliate and band engraving on one side. The reverse with an oval frog stud and the tip with an oval, football shaped, finial. Top with a wide, three ring, reinforcement band. Overall length 9". Condition superb. No hallmarks so possibly made by a very skilled American silversmith from the Baltimore area where other silver dirks are thought to have originated from. Circa 1820.
