HAND PAINTED SHIP PORTRAIT ON AN UNUSUAL SIZE PORCELAIN TEACUP. Depicted is a port view of the ship under full sail. Under the handle is painted the vessel name "TOP GALLANT". Cup is smaller than typical size encountered measuring just 2 3/4" tall x 3" diameter. Gilt borders around the rim, portrait and on handle. These were commissioned by 19th century sea captains while they were in the Port of Hamburg, Germany. Condition excellent. The vessel was built in 1863 at East Boston, MA. One of a small grouping of this unique form of ship portraiture that I assembled over several decades. Only cup I've ever seen in this size.
