19TH CENTURY SHIP'S FIGUREHEAD depicting a charming representation of a very young girl wearing her female, brass band, attire. She is wearing her very decorative band jacket and a straw hat with a fancy plume on top. In her right hand she holds a flower. 36" high. Excellent condition. Very unusual subject matter. One of a collection of four female figureheads we recently purchased from a collector who acquired most of them in the 1960's. They were repainted over the years using a palette of soft, pastel colors. Richard Hunter, the world's foremost figurehead historian, published an article that featured a figurehead created by this exact carver. The young girl, who Hunter named "Rosebud", looks almost identical to this girl.
We are always interested in purchasing nautical antiques. If you are selling one piece or your entire collection we would appreciate hearing from you.
