FABULOUS SET OF NAUTICAL MOTIF WOOD CARVINGS LIKELY PRESENTED TO A SEA CAPTAIN. Professional quality workmanship by a highly skilled marine carver. Includes a 22" long curved tiller arm boldly carved with rope twist, rope braid, turk's head and crown knot motifs. Rear section decorated on three sides with deep carved and gilded lettering "CAPTAIN/WILLIAM HEDLEY/NORTH SHIELDS/1870". Mounted on a custom made brass stand. Second item is a 24" long tapered swagger stick deep carved with rope twist, turk's head and crown knot motifs. Third piece is a stamp that was likely used for marking butter. The upper handle portion with rope twist, turk's head and crown knot motifs. Underside with large, high relief, letters "W*H". The letters are inverted so they read correctly after being stamped or impressed. 7 1/2" h. x 5 1/2" w. Everything in fine original condition noting that the tiller was cracked close to the carved letter area and has an old mend but no missing wood. Great age color throughout. A really nice set of nautical carvings.
