Eugene Grandin
Description

MINIATURE 19TH CENTURY WATERCOLOR SHIP PORTRAIT by 19th century French port painter Eugene Grandin. Depicts starboard view of the American bark "FANNIE". Signed lower right "Havre 1865/Eugene Grandin". Image size 6" x 8". Still mounted in the artists trademark gilt mat with rounded corners and 1/2" wavy moulding that he used to frame his miniatures. Beautifully rendered work showing the delicate rigging, men at work on deck and the vessels flags. Condition very fine. Grandin flourished during the third quarter of the 19th century and examples of his work appear in most maritime museums. The Peabody Museum in Salem, MA has five including a miniature that's the same size as this one. There are three barks named "Fannie" listed and all were built in Maine between 1853 and 1865. These little Grandin watercolors have always been sought after by collectors, especially when still retaining the original mat and frame. I've had this little gem hanging in my home for over 16 years.
