Confederate Motif Scrimshaw
Description

POLYCHROME COLORED SCRIMSHAW WHALE"S TOOH decorated with rare Confederate subject matter. One side with a starboard view of a Confederate, bark rigged, steamer and vessel name "Sumter". Above is a starburst device and a bird flying with a letter in its beak. The reverse with a monument adorned with Confederate flags and the name "JACKSON". Below are script initials "H. C. S.". Above the monument peak is another flying bird carrying a delicate leafy wreath in its beak. One edge decorated with another Confederate flag. The C.S.S. Sumter was commanded by Raphael Semmes before he took command of the infamous "Alabama". 5 1/2" h x 2 1/4" w. Also included with the tooth is a card(2" x 3 1/4") autographed "Raphael Semmes". Illustrated page 74 in Flayderman's "Scrimshaw and Scrimshanders". Also illustrated page 146 in the book "Bowie Knives  of the Ben Palmer Collection with caption stating Palmer sold it to Norm Flayderman in the 50's and always regretted doing so. Illustrated yet again as the centerfold in volume 24, number 3, 2002 issue of "Man at Arms" magazine. Overall condition excellent with strong engraving and nice polychrome coloring. From my personal collection.
