SCRIMSHAW CANE WITH DECORATED HANDLE and a presentation inscription "Prepared by E.J.T./for/Capt James Hart". Exact piece illustrated on page132 in Flayderman's "Scrimshaw and Scrimshanders". Each bevel of the octagonal handle with scrimshaw carving that includes the inscription, a large American Flag with an Eagle in the canton, potted foliage, a banner device, a fouled anchor and a Masonic symbol. The rounded top with a six-point star. The cane's upper 5" is made using two pieces of octagonal whale ivory and two thick hardwood spacers. The upper portion of the shaft also 8-sided with the lower portion round and tapered. Overall length 36 1/2". Condition very good with whale ivory having typical but sound age cracks. The whalebone shaft perfectly straight. Nice even age patina throughout. From my personal collection.
