FINE PANBONE PANEL ENGRAVED WITH POLYCHROME COLORED SCENESĀ ON BOTH SIDES. At first glance it appears to be a busk but it seems far too large and heavy for that use. The entire length of one side depicts a port view of a whaling bark and four of her whaleboats engaged in sperm whaling. At least 9 whales shown, three marked with waif flags. The reverse profusely decorated with various scenes within decorative borders. The top with a harbor scene of two warships flying flags and multiple pennants. Below that are rows of buildings, pierced hearts, a cottage and church, a black swan, a stone fort and lovebirds. Tapered shape measuring 14 5/8" l. x 2 1/4" wide at the top. A hole bored through the top that was likely for display purposes. Deep, bold engraving that is polychrome colored throughout. Condition very fine and has acquired a beautiful deep age patina over its entire surface. Circa 1840. Another similar example by the same artist illustrated on page 63 in West and Credland's book "Scrimshaw The Art of The Whaler". Another example with a near identical whaling scene is in the Greenwich Maritime Museum. From my personal collection.
