By Edward or William Hill
Description

BEAUTIFULLY CARVED SCRIMSHAW TOOTH attributed to Edward or William Hill. Circa 1820-25. Profusely carved over its entire surface with multiple motifs. One side with a port view of Nelson's flagship H.M.S. Victory. Above it are two angels holding a crown that's within banners that are captioned "NELSON/SHIP/VICTORY". Above that is a scene depicting a crocodile chasing a man. The top with a seated Brittania viewing a ship passing under a Crescent Moon. The very tip with a harp that has a figural decoration. The reverse with a jack tar standing in front of a pair of cannon and multiple flags. Above his head is a world globe and a banner inscribed "DEFIANCE". The center of the tooth with a scene depicting Neptune, in a horse drawn chariot, passing under a sun symbol. Above him is a whale ship and two whaleboats engaged in sperm whaling. The top with flowers, love birds, clasped hands and an Eye of Providence symbol. Along one edge is another, full standing, sailor portrait. The other edge with a simple maiden holding a glass and above her is an obelisk which is likely a memorial to Admiral Nelson. 7 5/8" tall x 3" wide. Condition superb. Lovely age color. Confidently engraved throughout using bold lines and intaglio style. Illustrated on page 63 in Alan Granby's book "Wandering Whalemen and Their Art".  Was exhibited at The Cahoon Museum in 2022. Has a display stand. Over the years I've had a few examples by these artisans, this tooth is by far the best I've seen. It has all the key ingredients, subject matter, quality of work, great size and shape and fine condition. From my personal collection.   p.o.r.
