EXCEPTIONALLY WELL ENGRAVED SCRIMSHAW TOOTH THAT IS SIGNED BOTH SIDES BY THE ARTIST. One side with a scene depicting a cutlass wielding sailor battling an island man who has a young maiden in his grasp. Behind them is foliage, buildings and a palm tree. Meticulously signed lower left "H Hand S.C.". The reverse with a portrait of a Civil War Admiral beneath a foliate design. This side with tiny signature in lower right "Henry Hand S.C.". There is a deep carved circular design around the entire tip of the tooth. Henry Hand is listed as an Acting Master in the U. S. Navy during the Civil War. He was involved with the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron at Port Royal Harbor, S.C. His style of engraving and obvious artistic skills put this scrimshaw tooth in the exceptional quality category. Almost solid tooth that measures 6" h. x 2 1/2" w. Condition superb throughout. Circa 1860-65. From my personal collection.
