W 1580

Variant C.C. Brand Whale Gun
Description

UNUSUAL, C. C. BRAND STYLE, WHALE GUN WITH ENGRAVED IRON FRAME that retains traces of silver plating still on it. It is quite possible this gun was made by Allen Thurber & Co. because it has several features that differ from the Brand gun. The scroll engraving style very much like that found on other Allen firearms of the same period. Also of note is the unusually large trigger guard on this example. Walnut stock with an iron butt plate. 7/8" bore, 20" long, octagonal/round barrel with a brass ramrod tube that appears to have been professionally added sometime during its working life. It's interesting to note that one of the only known signed Allen guns has no tube. Overall length 36 3/4". Weighs 19 lbs. Iron bomb lance with some original black paint at the tip and the dried remains of the original rubber fins. Condition overall much better than expected on these 19th century whaling guns. Quite a unique example of this type gun. Would be interesting to know why it was originally made so fancy. Perhaps it was a display piece in the maker's shop.
