Whalebone Tub
Description

SOLD

EXTREMELY RARE WHALEBONE TUB bound together using two, 3/4" wide, copper bands. Nice large size and professionally constructed likely by the ship's cooper. Tapered, oval shape using 14 separate slats of nearly 1/4" thick whalebone. Top edges decorated with continuous scallop design. 11 1/2" l. x 8" w. Height 4 5/8" with handle slats extending to 6 3/4" h. Solid whalebone bottom with inside engraved with a large starboard view of a British ship under sail Condition excellent noting that a few of the peened copper pins that help hold the copper bands in place may be replacements. Also there are a few stains on the inside of the bottom that somewhat cloud the engraved scene. They appear to be from some type of acidic fruit that sat in there "back in the day". All the bone and copper with desirable age color. Circa 1830-40. A very scarce scrimshaw item.
