Whalebone Cribbage Board
Description

RARE, 19TH CENTURY, SCRIMSHAW CRIBBAGE BOARD made in the form of a large sperm whale. 16" long. Center pierced for cribbage pegs. Surrounding all the holes is a boldly engraved starboard view of a whaleship and three of her whaleboats engaged in sperm whaling. Most of the border decorated with a leafy vine motif. Signed with name "John Shiff" and other initials. Overall condition excellent noting an old loss of the tip from the upper tail area. This is a very rare scrimshaw item that is especially nice with the bold whaling scene. A great piece of pan bone scrimshaw. Circa 1840. Ex collection Paul Madden and Paul Vardeman. Illustrated on page 176 in "Scrimshaw: The Whaler's Legacy" by Martha Lawrence.
