Fine Cagework cane
Description

BEAUTIFULLY CRAFTED SCRIMSHAW WALKING STICK. The upper portion of the highly polished whalebone shaft  done in the open, cagework motif with a rope carved column in the center. The cage is decorated above and below with silver dots within diamond shaped baleen inlays.  The rest of the shaft done in seven distinct  carved sections that include relief carved rings, flute and rope twist motifs and a plain tapered tip. The whale ivory knob is a carved crown knot that is attached to the shaft using two thick spacers, one made from silver and the other baleen. Overall length 36 1/2". Condition superb. Circa 1840. This is a very high grade scrimshaw cane.
