19th Century Scrimshaw display
Description

PAIRS OF SCRIMSHAW CARVED WHALE'S TEETH AND WALRUS TUSKS. Circa 1850. The tusks each engraved one side with four separate scenes that depict leafy flowers, opposing views of two sailing vessels and at the top pilot boats passing a lighthouse while approaching a fort that flies a large American flag. Each scene separated by elaborate diamond designs. Everything beautifully polychrome colored. Tusk length 15 1/2". The 5 1/2" high teeth each decorated with polychrome floral scenes and the same diamond border design as the tusks. They are mounted on more recent, large oval, teak bases. Condition overall excellent noting old, stable age cracks at the base of the teeth. There is another tusk by this artisan illustrated on page 30 in Flayderman's "Scrimshaw and Scrimshanders". This unusual and most attractive display of 19th century scrimshaw is one of the nicest I've seen in quite some time. High quality workmanship throughout. Very, very pretty.
