W 42

Signed "Frank"
Description

SUPERBLY ENGRAVED SCRIMSHAW TOOTH carved one side with port view of a ship under full sail and caption below "Charles W. Morgan". Below that is a large portrait of a sailor wearing a straw hat while seated on a barrel smoking his pipe. Incredible workmanship throughout with no details spared. Even has a small anchor tattoo on his left forearm. Signed lower right "FRANK". Done on a large, 19th century, tooth that the artist prepared on one side only, leaving the reverse in its natural state with the original, deep age yellow" patina intact. Beautifully shaped tooth that measures 7.25" l. x 3.75" w. This example would be early work done by Frank Barcelos when he first came to New Bedford from Portugal. Back in the 50's and 60's an unworked 19th century tooth of this quality would show up on occasion but that didn't last long. Illustrated on page 52 in Flayderman's "Scrimshaw and Scrimshanders" where Norm used it as an example of desirable, modern scrimshaw.
