CIVIL WAR RELATED WHALESHIP INSURANCE POLICY with added, 6% surcharge, clause covering losses, including capture, inflicted by Confederate cruisers, etc. Issued by Pacific Mutual Insurance in favor of Edward C. Jones, second mate, insuring against his loss of earning power should there be an encounter during the voyage. Issued at New Bedford November 21, 1862. The Roman left New Bedford August 22, 1859 and returned May 9, 1863. The insurance coverage was $1,750.00 at a cost of $88.50. Printed and filled in both sides on blue, 9" x 11", paper. Condition overall good and all very legible. Quite interesting document in that the Confederate coverage was added mid voyage as the Civil War at sea heated up. Sperm oil was valued at 150 cents per gallon. Ex collection; Barbara Johnson sold by Swann Galleries September 25, 1997.
