19TH CENTURY SCRIMSHAW KNITTING NEEDLE with the whale ivory top carved into the form of an eagle's head with inset baleen eyes. Upper 5 3/4" constructed using 14 varying sections of whale ivory, baleen and teak wood. The balance of the needle made of wood. Overall length 14 1/4". Condition good noting expected warpage that can be seen in photo. Illustrated on page 227 in Flayderman's "Scrimshaw and Scrimshanders". A near identical pair by the same maker as this one recently sold at auction for about $1,650. From my personal collection.
