19TH CENTURY SCRIMSHAW TOOTH DECORATED ON BOTH SIDES. Executed by the artisan named The British Warship Engraver by Stuart Frank in his definitive dictionary of scrimshaw artists. One side with the artists trademark naval vessel in a harbor with multiple buildings in the background. The reverse with a beautifully executed whaling scene depicting a bark and three of her whaleboats engaged in sperm whaling. Each boat is fully manned with six whalemen that are in pursuit of four spouting sperm whales. 7" l. x 2 5/8" w. Condition very fine. Tooth has nice age color throughout. Over the years I was able to locate 4 example by this artist and kept them all in my personal collection. This maker was a very skilled craftsman whose work was confidant and boldly executed.

We are always interested in purchasing nautical antiques. If you are selling one piece or your entire collection we would appreciate hearing from you.
