SUPERBLY ENGRAVED SCRIMSHAW TOOTH with a starboard view of a large naval ship in a harbor with multiple buildings in the background. Over the years I was able to find 4 examples of this artisan's work. Stuart Frank labels him the British Warship Engraver in his comprehensive dictionary of scrimshaw artists. The quality of his engraving is bold confident and superb throughout. An impressive thick and heavy tooth that measures 7"l. and a full 3" wide over most of its length. Condition very fine noting a natural flaw along the bottom edge likely due to an existing dental problem the whale was having when captured. Fabulous deep age patina throughout. From my personal collection. Black steel and brass display stand included.

We are always interested in purchasing nautical antiques. If you are selling one piece or your entire collection we would appreciate hearing from you.
