Whalebone Planter
Description

VERY RARE, OVAL SHAPED, SCRIMSHAW PLANTER all made from whalebone. The wide staves all nicely shaped along the entire top edge and held together by four narrow metal bands that I believe are brass that has acquired a deep age patina. The tall end slats ornately fashioned and pierced with hearts. Whalebone bottom reinforced to prevent warpage by thru bolting an iron file strap across it. The interior has an unusual feature that I've never seen before having been fitted with a custom made tin liner that is removable. 10" l. x 8.50" w. x 5.50" deep. The tall end slats are 8" tall. Condition overall excellent noting a small piece of bone(prox 3/8" x 3/4") missing from one of the tall staves. Everything with wonderful age color throughout. Circa 1830-40. About the nicest example of this rare scrimshaw form that I've ever come across.  p.o.r.
