BEAUTIFULLY PAINTED SHIP PORTRAIT BY A GERMAN ARTIST. Executed on a white porcelain teacup. Depicts a gilt bordered port view of the vessel under full sail. The vessel's name, "SEBASTIAN CABOT", applied below the water. Artist's signature on the underside "C. Kappauf". Popular items commissioned by 19th century sea captains who visited the Port of Hamburg, Germany. Condition overall excellent. 3 3/4" tall x 4 1/2" diameter. The ship was built in 1854 at Thomaston, Maine and was undoubtedly named after the explorer and cartographer Sebastian Cabot. One of a small grouping of this unique form of ship portraiture that I assembled over several decades.
