HAND PAINTED SHIP PORTRAIT on a white porcelain tea cup. An item that 19th century sea captains would commission to be done while in the port of Hamburg, Germany. The porcelain cups were german made usually at the J. G. Hauthal & Co porcelain factory. This cup hand decorated, within a gilt border, with the port view of a ship under full sail. Below the vessel and on the mast pennant is the ship's name "TRIMOUNTAIN". The underside of the bottom signed by the artist "C. Kappauf/Hamburg". The upper part of the cup and the handle also with gilt decorations. 3 3/4" tall x 4 1/2" diameter. Condition excellent. The ship Trimountain was built at Medford, MA in 1850. This cup is one of a small grouping of this unique form of ship portraiture that I assembled over several decades. I found them to be quite scarce and very beautifully done.
